There are two major types of cancer treatment. One is the surgical oncology and the other being medical oncology.

Surgical oncology: This deals with use of surgical procedures to eliminate the the cancerous cells. İt aims to completely remove or separate a tumor from the body. İn cases where this is however not possible, advanced technology and medical procedures can be supportive. The techniques employed in surgical oncology is the
1) open surgery (large incisions are made to take out the growing tumor) and

2) minimally invasive (varieties of techniques such as laparoscopy, robotic surgery, laser, etc are used. As the name suggests, large incisions are not required in this type of treatment)
Types of cancer that may require surgical oncology treatment options include colon, breast, brain, liver, and lung cancer to mention a few.

Medical oncology on the other hand uses mainly medicine and a multi disciplinary approach toa treat cancer.

Chemotherapy and immunotherapy are usually administered to patients.
Chemotherapy; a chemical treatment that targets and kills the cancer cells.

İmmunotherapy; this helps to increase the body’s defense mechanism against cancer using a biological method. Medicine, pain management, nutrition and psychological treatments and support are all provided in this approach.
